Emergency Medical Services Technology
Program Guide with Course and Admission Requirements:
Note: The Emergency Medical Services program is a selective admission, limited enrollment program.
Program Description:
Good at making split-second decisions and staying calm in
a crisis? This may be the job for you. EMT's and Paramedics
respond to medical emergencies, assess the patient's injuries
or illness, stabilize the patient by administering emergency
medical care and transport injured or sick persons to medical
facilities.
Typical Tasks May Include:
- responding to medical emergencies and determining the nature of the injury
- administering basic and advanced life support including cardiac, medical, trauma, pediatric, obstetric, and psychiatric illnesses
- transporting persons to medical facilities
Characteristics Students Need to be Successful:
- focused but extremely flexible
- physically fit and love the outdoors
- work in a team approach
- well informed on subjects and diligent in seeking out information
- have patience
- confidence is an absolute in an emergency
- organized and able to multi task
- take constructive criticism in a positive manner
- follows through without being supervised
Potential Careers and Employers:
- Careers: Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), Paramedic or Health Care Administrator
- Employers: Emergency medical services staff work for hospitals, private ambulance services, and municipal fire, police or rescue squad departments. Opportunities are also available in private industries like Walt Disney World and Lockheed Martin, and the U.S. Military.
