B16. One Code, One Standard: Procedural Uniformity in a Multi-Campus Environment
For the past few decades, our colleges have transitioned from single-site locations to multi-campus institutions. The leadership and student body often vary from site-to-site resulting in many sub-cultures within one college. As the pendulum continues to shift toward campus based models, consistency in student conduct processes is crucial. This presentation examines reasons to maintain procedural uniformity in handling disciplinary situations and proposes a way to achieve such in a multi-campus environment.

B17. Civility: What to Do When It's Not Taught at Home
This presentation will focus on college speech codes and codes of conduct that, although well intentioned, may violate students' first amendment rights. Attendees will review and evaluate various student codes of conduct that are designed to create a harmonious atmosphere and promote diversity, but may actually result in being vague and overbroad.

B19. Regulating Partisan Political Activities on Campus: What to Do, and What Not to Do
With the federal election cycle about to start, students, faculty members and staff members need to know what kinds of partisan political activities they can engage in and what kinds might result in jeopardy to their tax-exempt status. This session will explore common sense do’s and don’ts about the use of college facilities, email systems, and other resources for partisan political purposes.

Presenter: Larry White, Vice President and General Counsel, University of Delaware

Track: College Operations and Risk Management

B20. Faces, Spaces and Blogs: How Technology in a Digital World is Affecting Our Community
Students rely on immediate communication, often with hundreds of “friends” through the many forms of digital technology.  Too often these communications cross lines of protected speech or privacy.  While many institutions are well-intentioned in their responses, they continue to fall behind in dealing with the issues, and often make decisions that do not stand up to legal challenges.

Presenter: Saunie Schuster, Partner, National Center for Higher Education Risk Management (NCHERM)
