Letter from Dean of Social Sciences and Physical Education

EDF 2005 & EDG 2701 Students:

Effective Summer 2005, all Valencia students who are observing classes in Florida Public Schools were required to have a background check done before completion of the course. Some schools will require completion of the background before entering their classrooms. I have attached the Education Student Handbook which includes a memo explaining the statute, Valencia's interpretation, the observation requirements, the observation form, and other useful information. Please read each of the documents carefully and thoroughly.

------ BACKGROUND CHECK FORMS ------------
Background check applications for Orange County Public Schools (OCPS) through the Additions Program can be completed and submitted online at Follow the steps on the form for completion of the process. Questions about the background screening process should be addressed with the school district office at (407) 317-3323.

Background check applications for The School District of Osceola County can be secured through the Oasis Volunteer Program at 817 Bill Beck Boulevard, Kissimmee, Florida 34744 or by calling 407-870-4080. Follow the steps on the form for completion of the process. Questions about the background screening process should be addressed with the school district office.

------- OBSERVATIONS ---------------------------
Please remember that you are observers in the classrooms and not teachers, teacher assistants, or active participants. Your requirements for the observations are attached. Modifications to the areas in the requirements can be made for a limited number of hours based solely on mutual agreement between you and your professor.

The affidavit is your observation form located within the Education Student Handbook. Please print it and take with you on your observations. State statute requires 15 hours of observation for EDF 2005 and EDG 2701 (making it 30 total hours). You are not to use hours from one class to satisfy hours in the other. If you do not complete the required hours, you will receive an F for the course.

-------- ONLINE COURSES ----------------------------
Online Students- Online students are required to complete the 15 hours of observations for each course as well. Also, online students should be checking their Atlas accounts (as other students should) for course updates, including information regarding any online course orientations.

--------- Education Student Handbook ------------
You will also find a copy of our Education Student Handbook from 2006-07. This will help you better understand the requirements of your portfolio, the classroom observations, the transfer process, and our mutual expectations. This handbook is to be read by you in great detail and it is advised that you print it and bring with you to the first class meeting. I do not expect there to be significant updates to the handbook before the Fall term begins, but if there are changes, you and your professor will be notified.
