Boot Camp for Online Instruction

LCTS 3212 - COURSE DESCRIPTION



This three-day intensive course addresses the pedagogy and technology essentials for teaching online using Valencia’s learning management system, Blackboard. The course consists of 10 hours pedagogy and 10 hours technology development delivered in both face-to-face and online formats.  Participants will master the essential tools of Blackboard and use those tools to produce and implement interactive content in their online courses.  Participants will also develop a framework of online best practice strategies for engaging, instructing, supporting, and communicating with students in the online environment.  In addition to gaining essential skills to teach in online and hybrid courses, participants will produce one orientation/welcome module and at least one content module for their course.

COURSE OUTCOMES

Participants will be able to:

  1. Apply sound, foundational pedagogical principles in the online environment.

  2. Apply sound, foundational technological principles in the online environment.

  3. Access resources to support faculty members and students in online teaching and learning.

  4. Design a communication plan to effectively communicate with students in the online environment.

  5. Create a comprehensive orientation module in the online learning management system (Blackboard).

  6. Produce a content module in the online learning management system (Blackboard).

COURSE SCHEDULE

Hybrid Course: July 20 - 28, 2012, East Campus, CRN 2014

  • This is a hybrid course that includes online course work in addition to the required face-to-face meetings. Complete attendance at all sessions is required. Meeting dates are 7/20/12, 7/27/12 from 12:00 - 5:00PM, and 7/28/12 from 9:00 - 3:00PM.
  • Please Note: Registration for this course will close on 7/13/12. To register please contact cfox17@valenciacollege.edu. The facilitator will contact participants two weeks before the course begins to collect pertinent information.
 

Hybrid Course: November 30 - December 8, 2012, Osceola Campus, CRN 2175

  • This is a hybrid course that includes online course work in addition to the required face-to-face meetings. Complete attendance at all sessions is required. Meeting dates are 11/30/12, 12/7/12 from 12:00 - 5:00PM and 12/8/12 from 9:00 - 3:00PM.
  • Please Note: Registration for this course will close on 11/9/12. If the course is closed, please contact Charles Fox, cfox17@valenciacollege.edu. The facilitator will contact participants three weeks before the course begins to collect pertinent information.
 

Hybrid Course: April 12 - 20, 2013, West Campus, CRN 2290

  • This is a hybrid course that includes online course work in addition to the required face-to-face meetings. Complete attendance at all sessions is required. Meeting dates are 4/12/13, 4/19/13 from 12:00 - 5:00PM and 4/20/13 from 9:00 - 3:00PM.
  • Please Note: Registration for thi.s course will close on 3/29/13. If course is closed, please contact Charles Fox, cfox17@valenciacollege.edu. The facilitator will contact participants two weeks before the course begins to collect pertinent information.
