Short Term Study Abroad: How to Apply

Steps to Apply

  • 1Review the program's page and speak with the Program Leader to get important details such as the out-of-pocket expenses, travel dates, and course information.
  • 2Schedule a meeting with a SAGE Advisor and/or Financial Aid Advisor to discuss your eligibility.
  • 3Complete an on-line application for the Study Abroad program by visiting the program's page . Please use Google Chrome as your web browser when filling out the application.
  • 4Program Leader approves your application.
  • 5The SAGE office verifies your program and scholarship eligibility, processes your application, and sends you an eligibility letter.
  • 6Pay the $250 application fee at the Business Office. Acceptance into the program is on a first-come basis based on the date the application fee is received. Students are advised to obtain a receipt of payment.
  • 7Receive an acceptance letter from the SAGE office.
  • 8Attend a mandatory orientation. Passports are due on or before the orientation.
  • 9Pay the program deposit at the Business Office and be enrolled in the course by the SAGE office. If you are eligible for a scholarship than those funds will be applied to your Atlas account after the deposit deadline.
  • 10Pay the final program payment at the Business Office or online through your Atlas account.
Please note that the application fee is non-refundable unless (1) you are not accepted into a program or (2) the program is cancelled. Do no apply unless you are sure that you are going to to enroll in the program.

Short-Term Programs 2019

These short-term programs are led by Valencia faculty members & are one to two weeks long. They are held during spring break or summer semesters.

In addition to the credit course/s listed, program leaders may make available other program options such as: global learning internship, international service learning project, independent study, or audit. It is up to the program leader what he or she would like to offer, so please contact him/her directly to discuss your options.

Important Information

Program Eligibility

  • Be 18-years-old by time of travel.
  • Have an Institutional GPA of 2.5 at application deadline.
    If this is your first semester at Valencia, the SAGE Office will accept a 2.5 transfer or high school GPA.
    If this is your first semester at Valencia and you do not have a transfer or high school GPA, the SAGE Office will accept PERT Scores.
  • Meet course requirements, including prerequisites. Please check the program's page.
  • Have no disciplinary or academic holds

Scholarship Eligibility

  • Be a degree-seeking student at Valencia College (you can get a scholarship after graduation as long as the program runs by the following semester so, for example, students who graduate in the fall term can get a scholarship for the spring term but not the summer term)
  • Have completed 12 college level credits by time of travel
  • Have not received a study abroad scholarship within the current academic year
  • Be enrolled in at least 3 additional credits other than the study abroad program in the term of travel for spring (this does not apply for summer programs)
  • Have completed at least one semester with Valencia within the last year
  • Maintain a minimum GPA of 2.5 at application deadline
  • Attend the mandatory SAGE orientation session and all meetings with your program leader
  • Obtain a grade of C or better in the study abroad course

Non-U.S. Passport Holders

  • Before you apply, verify if you need a visa (it is usually a tourist visa that you will need) and what the requirements are at www.visahq.com
  • Contact the program country embassy to confirm the requirements
  • You can only get conditional acceptance into a program. A place may be held for you up to the program payment deadline, but you must secure the visa before we can enroll you.
  • Please note that not all visas are approved and you will have to do this at your own expense and risk
  • If you are at Valencia on an F or J visa, you must meet with an international advisor to see if there are any travel restrictions on your visa

Dual Enrollment Students

  • You must be 18 years old at the time of departure.
  • You must be declared a degree-seeking student by the time of departure. Current Dual Enrollment students are not eligible to participate in study abroad.
