New Faculty Institute Overview
As faculty new to Valencia, you have been enrolled in our New Faculty Institute starting this July. The purpose of this institute is to provide an orientation experience for all new faculty to the college. This institute has been designed to provide you with a supportive and informative start to your career as a Valencia educator. The online experience offers knowledge, resources, and tools to develop equity-minded materials and strategies to create an inclusive classroom climate and syllabus. Effective classroom management and safety strategies as well as the Essential Competencies of a Valencia Educator are explored while building a sense of community and belonging.
The Fall 2020 New Faculty Institute runs from July 27, 2020 through August 12, 2020 and will take approximately 20 hours to complete. Be sure to obtain a sample syllabus from your dean as we will be using it during the NFI.
Faculty who successfully complete all activities in the NFI will receive compensation.
To get started, follow the steps below:
1. Activate Your VID
In order to gain access to the online component of the NFI, you will need to first activate your Valencia ID (VID) through the creation of your Atlas account. Atlas is the Valencia College intranet platform that contains faculty and employee resources. Review How to Set Up Your Atlas Account to complete the steps to create your VID.
2. Access Your Valencia Email
You will want to access email account, which is where you will be notified that you have access to the NFI online component. You can expect to see emails with your access to the online NFI course within business days from activating your Atlas account.
3. Access New Faculty Institute in Canvas
On the day the NFI online component begins, please visit Canvas and sign in with your Atlas credentials. For more information, follow these steps to access your courses and resources in Canvas. Please feel free to explore all the available online content prior to the course start date, and return daily to the course to participate.
4. Review the Resource Hub
You will have the chance to fully explore the NFI Resource Hub as part of your NFI online component, but information has been included at this stage in case it is helpful to overview course design resources, technology resources, student support, and Valencia culture.
5. Connect with your Center for Teaching/ Learning Innovation (CTLI) Partner
During the first week of the New Faculty Institute, you will be contacted by your assigned Faculty Developer/Instructional Designer who will collaborate with you in the development of your fall online course and share information about our Faculty Development programs and Centers for Teaching/Learning Innovation.
6. Next Steps: Digital Professor Certification (DPC)
If you have not completed DPC, you will join a cohort of colleagues in an intensive 20-PD hour DPC course (LCTS3129), focused on online course design and delivery, based upon Valencia’s Rubric for Online Competencies. This 6-week experience begins on September 8th and will be facilitated by experienced online faculty and instructional designers. You will receive an email confirming your registration in the course by September 1st.

2. Approve Your Teaching Contract
Your department will send you an electronic contract to confirm the courses you will teach and the compensation you will receive. Depending on your role, you will complete a different area in Atlas. If you are part-time, use the FLAC system to approve your contract(s). If you are full-time, use the EPAF system to approve your contract(s).
