Abbie Potter Henry

Writing Consultant

I am from Eastern Kentucky and received my education at Pikeville College, where I graduated as a non-traditional student and single mother of three in 1991. My degree is in English Literature and Composition with a minor in Religious Studies. I have lived in Florida and worked as an adjunct professor and writing consultant at Valencia College, Osceola since 2005. As a writing consultant, I am deeply committed to helping students discover the writer within and develop the editing skills necessary to succeed in college and in life.

After leaving Syracuse University with my Master’s degree, I spent the next twenty or so years, shall we say, “collecting experience.” I was given the opportunity to become an English professor here at the Osceola campus in 1993 until I retired thirteen years later. As enjoyable as retirement was, five years later I was asked if I wanted to work with students one-on-one in the Learning Center. How could I not enjoy all the best parts of teaching with none of the irritations? Daily, I am amazed at the commitment of my colleagues and the effort the Osceola students put into their education—much more fun than retirement!

I come to Valencia from Alexandria, Egypt. I attended the University of Alexandria, where I graduated with a B.A. in law. However, my passion for languages and linguistics drew me to teaching. I worked as a full time teacher at Alexandria Language School and as a part time teacher teaching ESL at the Arab Academy for Science and Technology University. I have also been a program coordinator, as well as a teacher and principal in both Alexandria and Cairo. In 2015, I moved to Florida and joined the Valencia family. I was first an SL Leader and now work as a writing consultant in the Writing Center. My goal is to help non-native speakers feel comfortable using the English language.

Writing Consultant

Before moving to Florida, I lived in the metro-Detroit area of Michigan, where I earned my B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. in English from Wayne State University.  I have been teaching and tutoring college-level writing for over ten years, and I am currently a writing consultant in the Writing Center at the Osceola campus.  As a member of the Learning Support team, I enjoy collaborating with students while exploring the writing process during one-on-one consultations.

I love helping people succeed in academics while learning valuable life skills that they will use beyond Valencia. As an EAP professor for Valencia College, I have taught all levels of EAP. I obtained my B.S. in Business Administration-Marketing and a B.A. in Spanish from UW-La Crosse and Universitas Castellae in Spain. My Master’s in T.E.S.O.L. is from UCF. When not at Valencia, I am either teaching fitness classes and swim lessons or spending time with my husband, our two daughters, and our puppy. I look forward to helping students with writing, grammar, speeches, and paragraphs.

I'm a Florida native from Orlando and I'm also a Valencia graduate. I have a Master's Degree in Creative Writing from the University of Central Florida where I studied literature and writing instruction. I have taught English Composition I and II here at the Osceola campus, and I am also a published author with credits in fiction, poetry and screenwriting. As a writing consultant, I love to help students become confident in their own abilities. My goal each day is to give students the tools needed for effective communication.
