Global Peace Week

Tuesday's Schedule

Morning Meditation

Lianna McGowan

Begin your day by centering your heart and mind in a short mindfulness practice to cultivate receptivity and openness. From this stance we can begin to listen to ourselves and others and work to develop a language that centers on restoration and healing.
 Time: 9:00 a.m. – 9:45 a.m.
 Venue: Virtual

Intersectionality and Poetry

Aaron Ellis

Join us for an introduction and meditation on intersectionality. We will hold space for participants to locate themselves in our intersectional, political landscape today. Participants will use poetry to articulate their own identities, and reflect on their own political, artistic, and/or professional commitments. All are welcome! No prior experience necessary.
 Time: 10:00 a.m. - 11:15 a.m
Venue: In-Person at Valencia's West Campus Special Events Center

Boundaries and Communication: Healthy Relationships Workshop

Roxane Perret of Victim Service Center

This workshop is an open dialogue on how to keep all relationships in our lives healthy. Participants will identify the characteristics of healthy, unhealthy, and abusive relationships through interactive scenarios, learn effective communication and boundaries within all relationships, recognize how perpetrators of violence use different tactics to gain power and control, comprehend why people stay in abusive relationships, learn how they can help a friend in an abusive relationship, and receive helpful resources in their community.
 Time:  11:30 a.m. – 12:45 p.m.
Venue: In-Person at Valencia's West Campus Special Events Center

Ubuntu in Action: An approach to human building-relationship and promote inclusive societies

Dr. Alecia Blackwood

The concept of Ubuntu is rooted in the idea that we are human through other people. The core element of Ubuntu is the ethic of care. This presentation focuses on how the Ubuntu teaching framework can help restore humanity and foster peace in education for freedom and genuine love.
 Time: 2:30 p.m. – 3:45 p.m.
 Venue: Virtual

Developing a Daily Peace Practice

Paul Chapman

Great peace leaders of the past, like Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., thought of nonviolence/peace as a way of life. He asked those who joined him to work on the values and skills of peace every day. Gandhi supposedly said, "There is no way to peace. Peace is the way." Peace is something you have to practice and be every day. The goal is not perfection but rather learning how to practice peace with a sustained effort that endures through repeated failure and success. What you do on a daily basis that nurtures the better parts of your humanity? This workshop will explore how to develop and sustain a daily peace practice.
 Time: 4:00 p.m. - 5:15 p.m.
 Venue: Virtual

CANCELLED - Self-Knowledge and Community Activism

Dr. Lua Hancock and Dr. Aaron Ellis

CANCELLED - The world is full of the loud noises of materialism, speed, bias, and inequality.  It can be hard to know where and how to take genuine action.  Stress and overwhelm can cause retreat or extreme focus on “self-care.” In this workshop we discuss and practice ways to care for yourself and your community, exploring how the two can be woven together.  In our view, self-work is a co-requisite to grounded community-based activism.  As you better know and are grounded in yourself, your thoughts and actions become more connected. You become poised to engage as an actor of social change in your community. Participants will be able to experience various contemplative practices, plan how to continue these practices, and determine how to be an agent for social change.
 Time: CANCELLED - 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.
