What is Service Learning?


Service Learning is a teaching and learning strategy that integrates meaningful community service with instruction and reflection to enrich the learning experience, teach civic responsibility, and strengthen communities. Service Learning allows students and faculty to blend educational goals with their passions.

Faculty may choose to incorporate service learning into an existing course to provide experiencial learning which benifits the community and enhances student engagement with the course content. To learn how, sign up for the faculty development course Service Learning Across the Curriculum.

Students can participate in service learning through the service learning course SLS 2940. SLS 2940 provides the opportunity for students to earn college credit while responding to real needs in the community and applying knowledge from their courses . This in a variable credit,independent study type of course in which students work under the direction of a faculty advisor. Students may register for 1-4 credits (20 hours of service per credit).
