Part-Time Language Programs

Valencia College offers a variety of continuing education language programs, for every language proficiency level.

Valencia College Continuing Education provides a variety of language programs, products, and services to help individuals learn another language whether for personal or professional reasons. We have extensive instructor-led programs in English, Spanish, and Portuguese, as well as a variety of online language courses. The goal of these courses is to help students communicate in the target language across a wide range of topics.

For those interested in language learning in the workplace, our offerings include the following: instructor-led language programs that can be delivered on site, online occupational language courses, a language assessment service for employers, and very helpful language phrasebooks.

English for Speakers of Other Languages

Our English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) program is designed for adults with a busy schedule and is geared for all levels from beginner to advanced. This program is designed to increase the participant’s proficiency in speaking, listening, reading, and writing English.

English Pronunciation

The English Pronunciation program consists of a series of four 16-hour courses for intermediate and advanced English speakers who want to improve their overall pronunciation to be better understood by native speakers.

Portuguese

Our beginner level Portuguese language courses introduce participants to the basics of communicating in Portuguese in either personal or professional settings. Students will practice speaking, listening, reading and writing in class.

Spanish

Our dynamic and interactive Conversational Spanish for Today program introduces participants to communicating in Spanish in either personal or professional settings.


Language Level Descriptions

All students are placed according to communicative ability in the language.

There are nine levels of language proficiency as outlined below:

Unable to function in the spoken language.

Able to function in only a very limited capacity by using a number of memorized words and phrases.

Able to successfully manage a number of uncomplicated communicative tasks in straightforward social situations.

Able to handle a variety of tasks in previously learned, uncomplicated social situations. Speech is generally limited to the present tense and sentences may not always be complete.

Able to successfully handle a variety of communicative tasks in uncomplicated social situations. Can ask and respond to questions, make requests for information, and express personal meaning, but the quality and quantity of language is not sustained at a High Intermediate level in all contexts.

Able to successfully handle a variety of communicative tasks in uncomplicated social situations. Can ask and respond to questions, make requests for information, and express personal meaning, but responses may still contain hesitancy and grammatical inaccuracies.

Able to narrate and describe in major time frames and can talk about a wide range of concrete social and work topics. May still make errors with basic grammatical structures, but they have a much stronger control of the grammatical system than the Intermediate level.

Able to handle with ease and confidence a large number of communicative tasks and participate actively in most formal and informal conversations on a variety of topics. May still make grammatical and translation errors in unfamiliar contexts such as technical or professional level conversations. Cannot sustain a High Advanced level of proficiency.

Able to participate actively in most formal and informal exchanges on a variety of topics with linguistic ease, confidence, and competence. May still make some high-level grammatical and translation errors.

Cancellation Policy

Low enrollment may result in course cancellation. If a course cancels, and you have pre-registered, we will attempt to notify you. A notice will also be placed at the entrance to the classroom. Full refunds are given when a class is canceled by the college. Course fees will be fully refunded if your cancellation request is received at least 5 business days prior to the course start date. Refunds for cash or check payments will be refunded by check and will be mailed within 15 working days. Refunds for credit card payments will be issued back to the credit card.

What is an oral evaluation?
An Oral Evaluation is a placement assessment completed over the phone that will let us know in which level you should start classes. It has a series of pre-recorded questions and will take you about 10 minutes to complete. You may call any day, at any time. Your answers will be recorded and then evaluated by our assessment team.
