English for Speakers of Other Languages

Our English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) program is designed for adults with a busy schedule and is geared for all levels from beginner to advanced. This program is designed to increase the participant’s proficiency in speaking, listening, reading, and writing English. Each level contains a series of 32-hour courses, which can be taken in any order as each course covers new vocabulary and grammar. All ESOL courses within a level must be completed before moving up to the next level.

Program Structure

ESOL courses within a level can be taken in any order. For example, you can start with Level 2: Mid Beginner B and then take Level 2: Mid Beginner A.

Each course in a level is the same level of difficulty. All mid beginner courses are at a mid beginner level.

Each course within a level covers different objectives and topics.

All courses within a level MUST BE COMPLETED before moving up to the next level.

Grading

Grades are based on a letter grade scale of A-F.

  • A = 100-90%
  • B = 89-80%
  • C = 79-70%
  • D = 69-60%
  • F = 59-0%

For Level 1-8, grades are derived from attendance (25%) and tests (75%). For level 9, grades are derived from attendance (10%), oral presentations (15%), MyNorthStar Lab (15%), and tests (60%).

Course Material

Please note that books must be purchased before the start of classes and are not included in the tuition. They are available at the West Campus Bookstore, which is located close to the Cafeteria, at the Osceola Campus Bookstore in Building 4, at the Lake Nona Campus Bookstore in Room 135, or at the East Campus Bookstore in Building 5.

All of the information you need in order to buy books will be provided to you in your Registration Confirmation, including course title, book title, and store information. Please take this confirmation with you when you go to the bookstore so you know what books to buy.

Please make sure to have your books by the first day of class.

For Real-Time Virtual classes, please purchase your books at the Online Bookstore and they will be mailed to you.

Valencia College provides an English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) program for teens ages 12 through 15.
