Dr. Steven M. Sheeley

Dr. Steven M. Sheeley Vice President, Commission on Colleges

Dr. Sheeley currently serves as a Vice President with the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. He came to that position following over 20 years as a college professor and administrator. For most of that time, he was affiliated with Shorter College (Rome, GA), where he was Professor of Religion and Assistant Vice President for Academic Records and Academic Advising. He came to the school after a year of post-graduate teaching as Adjunct Professor of New Testament at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. In 1994, he received the Vulcan Materials Teaching Excellence and Campus Leadership Award as teacher of the year at Shorter.

Sheeley is a native of Springfield, Missouri. He holds the Bachelor of Science in Education degree from Missouri State University (Springfield, MO) with majors in Political Science and English; the Master of Divinity degree from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary (Ft. Worth, TX); and the Doctor of Philosophy from The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary (Louisville, KY), with a major in New Testament Studies. He completed further study at Indiana University (Bloomington, IN) and Yale University (New Haven, CT), exploring narrative and literary criticism.

Sheeley’s doctoral dissertation, Narrative Asides in Luke-Acts, was published by Sheffield Academic Press in 1992. He is also the coauthor of two books with Robert N. Nash, Jr.: The Bible in English Translation: An Essential Guide, and Choosing a Bible: A Guide to Modern English Translations and Editions, both published by Abingdon Press. He is the author of numerous articles, reviews, and essays, and he has edited three scholarly monographs. Steven has served on both the Editorial Board and the Executive Committee of the National Association of Baptist Professors of Religion, and he is past-President of the Southeastern Region of the NABPR. Sheeley was a member of the Literary Aspects Group of the Society of Biblical Literature and Treasurer for Theta Alpha Kappa, the national honor society for religion and theology. Steven is past-President of the Seven Hills Rotary Club in Rome and served as copresident of the Rome High School PTSO. He is a member of Phi Kappa Phi national honor society.

Steven is married to the former Elizabeth Lowry, a Speech-Language Pathologist with the Cobb County Schools. They have two children: Kristen is a graduate of the University of Georgia, and Mary is a student at Valdosta State University.

Dr. Teresa (Terri) Flateby

Teresa Flateby, who has been in the field of higher education assessment for over fifteen years, recently formed an assessment consulting firm, T.L. Flateby and Associates. Prior to this, she was the Director of Academic Assessment at the University of South Florida (USF), and before this appointment, she was the Director of Evaluation and Testing. She has a Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis in Educational Measurement and Research.

Terri has facilitated numerous assessment workshops for the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, Association of American Colleges and Schools, American Association for Higher Education, IUPUI’s Assessment Institute, Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology’s Best Practices Institute, as well as for regional conferences, such as New Mexico Higher Education Assessment and Retention Conference and North Carolina State University’s Undergraduate Assessment Symposium.

She has provided assessment consultation with individual institutions such as Columbus State University, South Dakota State University, Central Carolina Community College, ClarkAtlanta University, Mississippi University for Women, New College of Florida, and Alabama A & M University. She also has consulted with institutions about accreditation reports and Quality Enhancement Plans for the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools’ reaffirmation requirement.

She is the primary developer of the Cognitive Level and Quality of Writing Assessment (CLAQWA) online system which supports assessment and instruction from the classroom to the program and institutional levels. With the CLAQWA system, both strengths and weaknesses in students’ writing and critical thinking can be identified and addressed. Her most recent publication, Improving Writing and Thinking through Assessment is in press.

Roberta Brown

Roberta Brown currently serves as the Assistant Director of Learning Assessment at Valencia Community College. She has a Master of Arts degree in Mathematics Education with certifications in Community College Education and SAS Data Mining. She completed her graduate work at the University of Central Florida, where she is a Ph.D. Candidate in Higher Education Administration. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Pure Mathematics at Florida A&M University. Roberta has also been a professor of developmental and college credit mathematics for five years.

 

Helen Clarke

Helen Clarke

As a long-standing faculty developer, Helen Clarke has regularly contributed to Valencia’s assessment efforts. She has also presented at numerous conferences, including POD, NCSPOD, NISOD, the Chair Academy as well as national, regional, and local National Council of Teachers of English conferences. She has consulted at Broward Community College on writing in the disciplines and at Mesa Community College on assessment planning. Helen is co-author of “Faculty for Tomorrow’s Students: One College’s Faculty Development Solution” (To Improve the Academy, Vol. 19) and “Faculty Competency by Design: A Model for Institutional Transformation” (To Improve the Academy, Vol. 24). She is the Director of the Teaching/Learning Academy at Valencia Community College.

Jeff Cornett

Jeff Cornett has served as Director of Institutional Research at Valencia Community College for the last three years. He holds a Bachelors and Masters from Cornell University majoring in Industrial Engineering and Operations Research. In December 2008, he completed his Ph.D. at the University of Central Florida, majoring in Industrial Engineering and Management Systems with a specialization in Usability Engineering. His prior background included a variety of managerial and consulting roles in industry. Throughout his career, he has specialized in operations research and information engineering. He is an expert at turning raw data into useful information.

Edward Holmes

Edward Holmes is a Counselor at Valencia Community College. He holds an M.A. in Counselor Education from the University of Central Florida. Since beginning with Valencia in 2001, Edward has received awards for Model Faculty Portfolio, Excellence in Scholarship in Teaching and Learning, and Exemplary LifeMap. He completed the Counselor tenure process in 2006, and is currently a member of the Learning Evidence Team and the Learning Assessment Committee.

Rosiland Humerick

 

Rosalind Humerick is the Vice President for Research and Institutional Effectiveness at St. Johns River Community College. She holds a Ph.D. in Chemistry from Auburn University and a B.S. in Management and Chemical Sciences from the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology, United Kingdom. She first joined SJRCC in 1992 as a member of the faculty. After teaching chemistry for thirteen years, she became the Associate Dean of Arts and Sciences in 2005, and then the Dean of Arts and Sciences in 2006. Rosalind is also the College’s SACS accreditation liaison and chaired the College’s last reaffirmation of accreditation in 2003.

S. Sean Madison is the Director of Learning Outcomes Assessment at Miami Dade College in the Office of Institutional Effectiveness and serves as a co-chair of MDC’s Learning Outcomes Assessment Team. He received his BA in Literature and English from Morehouse College, his MA in Teaching English from Boston University and his Ed.D. in Higher Education – Administration from Florida International University. He has been involved with MDC’s Learning Outcomes Initiative since its inception and has successfully served at Miami Dade College for more than 16 years in a number of teaching and leadership capacities including assistant professor of English, department chairperson – college preparatory studies and dean of academic and student affairs.

John Frederick
Assistant Professor of Speech Communication
Miami Dade College

John Frederick is an Assistant Professor of Speech Communication at Miami Dade College’s Wolfson Campus. He received his BA from Brooklyn College, CUNY and his MA and PhD from Howard University in Human Communication Studies. He has served as lecturer at the University of Maryland and Assistant Professor at Johnson C. Smith University before coming to Miami Dade College. He is currently the co-chair of Miami Dade College’s Learning Outcomes Assessment Team (LOAT) and brings more than eight years of experience in learning outcomes assessment including design, administration, implementation and evaluation. He has conducted workshops on performance-based assessment design and “close the assessment loop.” He is particularly interested in the impact of learning outcomes on persons with various disabilities.

 

Isabel Rodriguez-Dehmer
Senior Associate Professor of Reading
Miami Dade College

Isabel Rodriguez-Dehmer is a Senior Associate Professor of Reading and holds Peter Masiko, Jr., Endowed Teaching Chair at Miami Dade College’s North Campus. She has been involved with the MDC Learning Outcomes Initiative since 2007 and has served as a chair of the Learning Outcomes Coordinating Council and a member of the Learning Outcomes Assessment Team. As a staunch advocate for literacy, she fought to defend its primary role in education at all levels. Rodriguez-Dehmer is a member of numerous civic groups, including the International Reading Association, the Florida Reading Association, the Dade Reading Association and the Florida Developmental Education Association (FDEA), which she serves as an executive member. She has been published in journals and received numerous awards, including the 2007 Florida Department of Education Chancellor’s Best Practice Award for the Learning Community Circle of Life and the 2004 Outstanding Educator of the Year. She is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction with a specialization in reading, research and cognition at Barry University’s Adrian Dominican School of Education.

 

Sandra Schultz
Professor of Biology, Health, and Wellness
Miami Dade College

Sandra Schultz is a Professor of Biology, Health, and Wellness at Miami Dade College’s North Campus and serves as the current Chair of MDC’s Learning Outcomes Coordinating Council. She has been working with the MDC Learning Outcomes Initiative for over five years and has presented on the success of this Initiative at various state and national conferences. She, along with other members of MDC’s Learning Outcomes Assessment Team, has been an invited consultant at Johnson County Community College (Overland Park, KS) and Oakton Community College (Des Plaines, IL). She is the 2009 Florida Professor of the Year awarded by Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and Council for the Advancement and Support of Education. She has also held a number of Endowed Teaching Chairs at Miami Dade College, including the Anastasios and Maria Kyriakides Endowed Teaching Chair and the Demie J. Mainieri/Miami Jai. She has been listed as a Distinguished Alumni in Higher Education, Florida State University.
