Dr. Steven M. Sheeley

Vice President, Commission on Colleges
Southern Association of Colleges and Schools

Dr. Sheeley currently serves as a Vice President with the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. He came to that position following over 20 years as a college professor and administrator. For most of that time, he was affiliated with Shorter College (Rome, GA), where he was Professor of Religion and Assistant Vice President for Academic Records and Academic Advising. He came to the school after a year of post-graduate teaching as Adjunct Professor of New Testament at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. In 1994, he received the Vulcan Materials Teaching Excellence and Campus Leadership Award as teacher of the year at Shorter.

Sheeley is a native of Springfield, Missouri. He holds the Bachelor of Science in Education degree from Missouri State University (Springfield, MO) with majors in Political Science and English; the Master of Divinity degree from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary (Ft. Worth, TX); and the Doctor of Philosophy from The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary (Louisville, KY), with a major in New Testament Studies. He completed further study at Indiana University (Bloomington, IN) and Yale University (New Haven, CT), exploring narrative and literary criticism.

Sheeley’s doctoral dissertation, Narrative Asides in Luke-Acts, was published by Sheffield Academic Press in 1992. He is also the coauthor of two books with Robert N. Nash, Jr.: The Bible in English Translation: An Essential Guide, and Choosing a Bible: A Guide to Modern English Translations and Editions, both published by Abingdon Press. He is the author of numerous articles, reviews, and essays, and he has edited three scholarly monographs. Steven has served on both the Editorial Board and the Executive Committee of the National Association of Baptist Professors of Religion, and he is past-President of the Southeastern Region of the NABPR. Sheeley was a member of the Literary Aspects Group of the Society of Biblical Literature and Treasurer for Theta Alpha Kappa, the national honor society for religion and theology. Steven is past-President of the Seven Hills Rotary Club in Rome and served as copresident of the Rome High School PTSO. He is a member of Phi Kappa Phi national honor society.

Steven is married to the former Elizabeth Lowry, a Speech-Language Pathologist with the Cobb County Schools. They have two children: Kristen is a graduate of the University of Georgia, and Mary is a student at Valdosta State University.

Karen Borglum
Assistant Vice President, Curriculum & Articulation
Valencia College

Dr. Karen Borglum currently serves as the Assistant Vice President of Curriculum and Articulation at Valencia Community College. Prior to this position, she was the Dean of Communications at Valencia’s West Campus, and she also served as the Director of a Title III grant.

Karen holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Marketing, a Masters of Arts degree in Communication, and a Doctor of Education in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Central Florida, in Orlando. Her professional development activities have included selection in the Management Development Program (MDP) at Harvard University, the 2002 Florida Community College System Chancellor’s Leadership Program in Tampa, Florida, the Leadership Academy in Toronto, the Leadership Orlando series.

Dr. Borglum has presented at state and national conferences in the areas of curriculum, instructional enhancement, and communities of practice. As part of her professional practice, Dr. Borglum has won a Bronze certificate for School-to-Work Best Teaching Practice, and designed a national communities of practice group through the American Association for Higher Education. She served as a lead QEP evaluator and as an onsite reaffirmation reviewer for SACS-COC, and she has also served, for two years, on the SACS-COC Annual Meeting Planning Committee. Additionally, she co-authored and article in The Community College Journal of Research and Practice entitled, “Academic and Social Integration of Community College Students: A case Study (August 2000),” and in 1996 she authored an article entitled, “What About Academic Standards?” for Community College Week and Community College Times. In 2012, she was invited to participate in the U.S. Department of Education’s College Completion Symposium.

Christina Hardin
Professor, English
Valencia College

Christina Hardin received her Doctorate in Education from the University of Central Florida in 2011. Her dissertation work focused on the relationship between pre-tenure community college instructors’ beliefs about teaching and learning, their approaches to the learning process, and the training they receive via a professional development program specifically established to provide training in teaching methods, pedagogy, curriculum, and/ or instruction. She has a Masters degree in English Language Arts, Higher Education, and an extensive background in Community College studies.

Christina has taught at Valencia College since 2006. She received tenure in 2011 following the completion of an intensive three-year tenure-track program in the Teaching and Learning Academy at Valencia College. She has served on numerous committees while at Valencia including serving her campus as the Faculty Association President. In addition, she has been the lead faculty representative for the English Assessment work at Valencia since 2009, served as a member on the Learning Evidence Team, served as a Great Teachers facilitator, and presented findings from the 2011 Assessment work at the State Assessment meeting hosted by Valencia College. She is a current member of the Learning Assessment Council, the Valencia Faculty Association, a faculty leader on the Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) team, and serves on tenure-track faculty members’ review committees

Michael Staley
Dean of Engineering, Design and Construction
Seminole College

Michael Staley serves as the Academic Dean of the School of Engineering, Design, and Construction; he is in his 7th year at Seminole State. Mr. Staley earned a Master of Civil Engineering with a specialty in structural engineering and a Master of Business Administration, a Bachelor of Science Civil Engineering, and a Bachelor of Arts in Physics & Mathematics. He passed the fundamentals of engineering exam in 1995 with more than 20 years of progressive experience in architecture, engineering and construction management, design project management, and structural engineering practice. He served as Co-Principal Investigator of a 5 year, $5,000,000 National Science Foundation grant funded for Seminole State.

Mr. Staley is a licensed Professional Engineer (P.E.) in the state of Florida and a certified Project Management Professional (P.M.P.). Prior to coming to Seminole State College, Mr. Staley served as the senior business leader of an international engineering firm, responsible for project mobilization and quality, safety, and fiscal management. He has presented at the National Science Foundation National Conference, Florida Association of Accounting Educators conference, and the League for Innovation Technology Conference in the areas of industry education, project management, project finance and risk management.

Alexander M. Perez
QEP Program Manager for Developmental Studies
Lake-Sumter College

Session presenter, Dr. Alexander Manuel Pérez, has been an educator in Florida high schools and colleges since 1993. He has presented annually at Florida Department of Education State Assessment Meetings at Valencia College, and in 2011 delivered the Keynote Address, entitled Literacy and the Net Generation, at the Florida Reading Council’s Annual Conference at Polk State College. Dr. Pérez serves Lake-Sumter Community College as the QEP Program Manager for Developmental Studies and is a full-time faculty member in the English Department. He has led the QEP through the successful SACS-COC on-site visit and reaffirmation of accreditation. In 2012, Dr. Perez was awarded the NISOD Excellence Award for his leadership of the Lake-Sumter Community College QEP: Strategies of Success for Students in Developmental Classes. Dr. Pérez holds a terminal degree in educational leadership with a specialization in curriculum and instruction from The University of Phoenix. He completed his bachelor of arts in English at The University of Vermont, serving one year as an overseas scholar at The University of Kent at Canterbury England. His master of arts is in English from Teachers College Columbia University. Dr. Pérez lives with his family in Orlando’s beautiful Lake Nona area, where he enjoys reading and writing non-fiction, patronizing the performing arts, and is a lifetime Disney enthusiast.

Kimberly A. Hardy
Executive Director, Student Success and Learning Engagement
Florida State College at Jacksonville

Dr. Kimberly Hardy currently serves as the Executive Director of Student Success and Learning Engagement at Florida State College in Jacksonville. Previously, Dr. Hardy served as the Dean of Instruction and Student Success for the Open Campus. In addition to teaching online courses in education and technology, Dr. Hardy has experience working with student success, institutional effectiveness, distance learning, military, and accelerated programs. She previously worked as a consultant for a national higher education consulting firm, as well as for the statewide Florida Distance Learning Consortium. Dr. Hardy earned a Ph.D. in Higher Education with a specialty in Instructional Systems from Florida State University, a Master of Arts degree in Student Affairs Administration from Michigan State University, and a Bachelor of Science degree in Management from Boston College.

Lynne S. Crosby
Director, Institutional Effectiveness and Accreditation
Florida State College at Jacksonville

Lynne Crosby is Director of Institutional Effectiveness and Accreditation at Florida State College at Jacksonville. She has held that position since 2009. Lynne earned a Bachelor of Arts from Wake Forest University, Master of Science from Florida State University, and a PhD from the University of Florida. With 23 years of higher education experience at colleges and universities in several states, including 8 years in the areas of assessment and accreditation, Lynne serves as the SACSCOC Accreditation Liaison for Florida State College at Jacksonville, and is responsible for SACSCOC reports, substantive change requirements, Quality Enhancement Plan, and reaffirmation activities. She also serves as a co-chair of the Institutional Effectiveness (IE) Committee charged with implementing and overseeing the collegewide institutional effectiveness and assessment program. Lynne provides employee training related to SACSCOC compliance certification, substantive change, and institutional effectiveness.

Regina Seguin
Librarian
Valencia College

Regina Seguin is a Librarian at Valencia’s West Campus. She has been with Valencia since 2005 and was hired in a tenure track position in 2007. She currently serves as the library representative on the College’s Learning Assessment Committee. She also chairs the libraries’ college-wide e-resources selection committee, which oversees the selection of online databases and other electronic resources for the college libraries. Regina is a graduate of the State University of New York at Geneseo and earned her Master’s in Library and Information Science from the University of South Florida.

Naomi Sleap
Project Coordinator, The Office of Institutional Effectiveness & Accreditation
Florida State College at Jacksonville

Naomi Sleap is a Project Coordinator in the Office of Institutional Effectiveness and Accreditation at Florida State College at Jacksonville. She has held that position since 2009. Naomi is a graduate of the University of Central Florida with a Bachelor of Social Work (B.S.W.) and The Florida State University with a Master of Social Work (M.S.W.). In her current role, Ms. Sleap is integrally involved in SACSCOC Substantive Change tracking, reporting, and training, preparations for reaffirmation and support to the College’s Institutional Effectiveness Committee.

State Assessment Meeting
