Frequently Asked Questions
Course Wrapper Frequently Asked Questions
What is a course wrapper?
A course wrapper provides targeted support for students who encounter challenges in
gateway courses that result in an unsuccessful first or second attempt. Course wrappers
focus on structured one-on-one coaching sessions and the reflective activity that
form the two essential components of your course wrapper experience.
What is the purpose of the one-on-one coaching?
One-on-one coaching with a certified course wrapper coach has two purposes: to identify
your unique strengths, challenges, and goals, and to create an action plan based on
what you have identified with coach guidance. During this time, coaches prepare you
for the reflective activity.
What is the purpose of the reflective activity?
The reflective activity, the second half of your course wrapper requirement, encourages
you to articulate your learning experience in your gateway course, identify areas
of improvement, and outline your steps for future success. This is a personal reflection
you complete after the one-on-one coaching session.
How do I enroll in the course wrapper?
Enrollment is automatic if you are unsuccessful in your gateway course. You will receive
communication informing you of the opportunity and placed in a Canvas course for the
course wrapper; this is where you will submit your completed action plan/reflective
activity.
What are my first steps to complete a course wrapper?
The first step is to complete this intake form that helps us understand your unique goals, skills, and needs. This information will
allow us to provide tailored support to enhance your academic experience, so please
be thoughtful and thorough in your responses. If you do not have this completed before
the first session, coaches will help you complete it. Any information provided is
strictly confidential.
Must I be enrolled in the gateway course first?
You do not need to be enrolled in the course first. If you already are, no extra steps
are needed. If not, register for the course within 24 hours of completing your first
session.
What classes are eligible for a course wrapper?
Currently, Valencia College offers the following courses for course wrappers:
- BSC1010C – General Biology I
- ENC1101 – Freshman Composition I
- HUM1020 – Introduction to Humanities
- POS2041 – U.S. Government
Do I need to make an appointment?
You do not need to make an appointment to have a course wrapper session. You may visit
any designated on-campus location or through online tutoring during hours of operation to start your session.
How long are the coaching sessions?
A session will take about 30 minutes (if you already completed the Intake Form) to
60 minutes on average. This is an opportunity to ask for help identifying your unique
strengths and learn more about free college resources.
Can I still qualify for a tuition waiver if I have completed the Canvas Course but
haven’t met with a success coach?
No, meeting with a coach is a necessary step in completing the course wrapper. Completion
of the course wrapper qualifies you for the tuition waiver.
What if I want more coaching despite finishing the first session/course wrapper?
We encourage you to follow up with coaches as frequently as you wish. Coaches will
check-in on your progress and assist with adjusting goals and strategies to fit your
evolving needs.
How do I receive the waiver after I have completed the course wrapper?
Once you have submitted the Action Plan for evaluation and it has met the criteria,
your student information will be sent to the Business Office to begin processing the
tuition waiver. No need to go in person, it will be credited to your student account.
