Planning Your Degree Pathway

This document outlines the courses needed to complete your Associate in Science (A.S.) degree and prepare you for employment in a specialized career upon degree completion. These courses include general education requirements as well as courses specific to your field. Please connect with your Student Success Coach if you need introductory coursework, have earned college credit, industry certifications, have completed an articulated program at a technical college, or would like to modify when you take certain courses and/or how many courses you take in a term. A Success Coach can also provide guidance on how to transition or transfer to a bachelor's degree program at Valencia or another Florida state college in case you decide to earn a bachelor's degree in the future.

Additional Degree Requirements

  • Introductory Coursework: Required courses based on placement tests including developmental education
  • Civic Literacy Exam: must satisfy Florida Civic Literacy Exam or appropriate scores in AP or CLEP exams
  • Grade Point Average (GPA): Need to maintain 2.0 or higher for both Overall GPA and Valencia GPA
  • Valencia Residency: Must complete at Valencia at least 25% of the college-level credits required for a degree

Pathway-Specific Information

  • If 6 credits were awarded through licensure, take 6 additional elective credits.
  • If 9 credits were awarded through licensure, take 3 additional elective credits.
  • If 12 credits were awarded through licensure, no additional elective credits are required.
  • Graduates of this program will earn their A.S. degree in Criminal Justice. The Criminal Justice Field Learning Track is limited to students who possess a valid and current Florida state certification in corrections, who are currently employed full time with a local or state corrections agency, and who remain employed while enrolled in CCJ 2942, CCJ 2943, and CCJ 2944.
  • Possess a valid and current FDLE state certification in corrections. This is only required for students planning to take CCJ 2942, CCJ 2943, and CCJ 2944. Certification status will be verified by accessing the student’s Geo-profile in ATMS.
  • Be currently employed with a local or state corrections agency while enrolled in CCJ 2942, CCJ 2943, and CCJ 2944. Employment status will be verified by accessing the student’s Geo-profile in ATMS.
  • Students who successfully pass the Florida Licensing Exam for correctional officer and complete a college credit course at Valencia College can be awarded the following, basied on their license type:
    • Correctional Officer, 420 hours - Awarded 6 credit hours for CJC 2000 and HSC 1400C
    • Correctional Officer, 445 hours - Awarded 9 credit hours for CJC 2000, CCJ 2022, and HSC 1400C
    • Correctional Officer, 552 hours - Awarded 12 credit hours for CJC 2000, CCJ 2022, CJL 2100 and HSC 1400C
  • The following courses may not be not offered every term: CCJ 2942, CCJ 2943, CCJ 2944. Consult with your Student Success Coach.
  • Due to the order of prerequisite courses you need to take, not all semesters of this plan will qualify you for full-time enrollment.
  • Prior to registering for CCJ 2358 Criminal Justice Report Writing: Capstone, please connect with your assigned Student Success Coach for approval.
