Online Remote Proctoring

Overview

Canvas-based exams and quizzes may require online proctoring. This means that you may be asked to participate in monitored testing for some (or all) of your courses.

Proctored testing usually means that the proctor monitors you as you take an exam to ensure you’re completing it without the assistance of other people, notes, online materials, etc. In a virtual setting, however, proctored testing means that you show us the space you are taking your exam in and record yourself taking your test.

Fortunately, Valencia College has partnered with an organization, called Honorlock, which makes remotely monitored testing a breeze. Through Honorlock, you’ll be able to access remote proctoring without scheduling your exam in advance or downloading bulky software; you don’t even need to create an account.

How it Works

Honorlock is a recorded and automated proctoring service that uses artificial intelligence (AI) technology. Your webcam is recording you during the test, but no one is watching your exam in real-time. Honorlock’s artificial intelligence (AI) technology monitors your session, and, if it identifies something to review, it will trigger an incident flag in the session recording. After your test, your instructor may review the exam session to look for any potential incidents.

Please note: We understand that life happens. We encourage you to acknowledge when something like this occurs so that your faculty will be aware when they review the video of your exam.

If your faculty requires online proctoring, you’ll simply need to access your test or quiz in Canvas and follow the steps shared in this video. You can also view this Getting Starting guide for step-by-step instructions. Basically, you’ll access your test or quiz in Canvas, ensure you have the Honorlock Chrome Extension downloaded, confirm your identity, show your workspace, and record yourself while you complete your assessment. It’s that easy.
