Types of Leave
One of the perks of working at Valencia College is enjoying time off to rejuvenate through leave.
There are several different types of leave to accommodate time needed away from work. Eligible employees can request leave by completing a Certificate of Absence in the Request and Manage my Leave System in Atlas.
To learn about the Request and Manage My Leave System, view the training sessions below:

Vacation and Personal Leave
|Vacation Leave allows eligible employees to take time off work for the purpose of rest, relaxation and/or attend to personal matters. It can also be used in place of sick leave if you have exhausted that leave balance and your supervisor approves that usage. This leave must be requested in advance. Please check with your supervisor to determine your department requirements for how far in advance this request must be made.
|Personal Leave allows eligible employees to take up to 4 days per fiscal year (charged against sick leave) for personal reasons. Since this leave comes out of your sick leave balance, you must have an equivalent available sick leave balance in order to use any personal leave hours. A leave request must be submitted for this leave as soon as possible.
Medical, Sick, Sick Leave Pool
|Family Medical Leave
|Family Medical Leave provides eligible employees to take job-protected leave for specified family and medical reasons. Available leave is used to cover this time off. Once/if all available leave has been exhausted, this becomes unpaid leave.
|Sick Leave allows eligible employees to take time off work for the purpose of illness, accident disability, extended personal illness, medical or dental health-related appointments or because of illness or death of the employee’s close family member or member of the employee’s household. Sick Leave cannot be used to extend vacation time if you have exhausted your vacation leave. A leave request must be submitted for this leave as soon as possible.
|Sick Leave Pool
|Sick Leave Pool provides leave for eligible employees who have exhausted all their accrued sick leave and need additional time off due to an accident or illness. Usage of these hours requires membership in the Pool and the completion of a form by your doctor. Please see the link to the policy for details.
Other Types of Leave
|Paid Parenting Leave
|Paid Parenting Leave provides eligible full-time employees paid leave for the purpose of recovery from the birth of a child and/or for activities related to the care and well-being of their newborn or adopted child under five years of age. It is to be used within the first six months following the birth or adoption.
|Leave of Absence
|Leave of Absence provides eligible employees with time off work for an extended period of time due to a long-term illness or for other personal reasons. This type of leave may be in addition to other types of authorized College leaves, may be requested by an employee who is not eligible for Family/Medical Leave (FMLA), or may be requested by an employee who exhausted the FMLA maximum as allowable by law. Each request is evaluated on a case-by-case basis.
|Court Related Leave
|Court Related Leave provides paid leave for eligible employees who are asked to perform a civic duty for jury duty, certain court appearances and administrative hearings.
|Domestic Violence Leave
|Domestic Violence Leave provides up to three business days of leave for domestic violence or sexual violence related matters.
|Military Leave provides eligible employees, who are also service members, a leave of absence for authorized military services, military training, and/or other related military matters in accordance with law.
